The Lorelei

Lorelei was born with an incredibly full, lovely, head of hair.

See? By the way, look at how tiny my baby was... I'm getting teary.

Oh and look at her here! I can't believe she was ever so little... or that Sean still has that shirt. I think he wore it on our first date in 1997. It may have also been featured in an episode of Dawson's Creek. But I digress....

Back to L's hair.

Within weeks, though she'd begun to cultivate a very specific look that can only be described as punk rocker meets backwards beatnik meets Kate Gossling, pre-divorce. Like Kate, the front behaves rather nicely and sweeps adorably to the side, while the back stands up in inexplicable bold spikes- but longer, like an 80's punk. Unlike Kate, there's a wide bald spot at the back of her head, leaving a generous rear- facing soul patch of sorts just below the bald spot. It's a look, for sure. We call it The Lorelei. It's ridiculous, but she works it. She's that kind of a girl.

Sadly, her hair has gotten so long that it's started to lay flat sometimes and, thanks to lots of tummy time, her bald spot has started to grow over. And while it's probably good that her hair is starting to look, well, normal, it marks the passage of time in a way that months on a calendar can't. *sigh* I sometimes (ok, daily) whisper to Lorelei while she sleeps, "Slow down! You're growing too fast..."
