Two Week Report

"She is big. She is not fat."  - Dr. Maxwell

Our pediatrician Dr. Maxwell types notes while he's meeting with patients so they have a personalized handout to take with them. This quotation was taken directly from our handout moments after he observed that while he would have been happy if Lorelei had gained fifteen ounces, in fact, she gained two pounds. Apparently some parents would worry their child was getting too plump. We thought, "Our kid is such an overachiever!"

The doctor said she looks perfect. She's in the top 93% for height and top 95% for weight. She officially weighed in at 10 pounds, 8 ounces and measured 22 inches long. I suppose given her parents it's no wonder she's such a phenomenal eater...

Incidentally, we met with Dr. Maxwell months before Lorelei was born. During our meeting he confessed that he is always behind schedule. Always. At first blush this may not seem like the most attractive quality in a doctor, but let me explain. The day we met him, he was already running late. Even though we had no actual baby, he spoke with us for almost a half an hour, answering every question we had in grave detail. We never felt rushed. We liked that a lot. And if that wasn't enough, he explained his tardiness this way, "I'm always late. The truth is, I'm the only brown pediatrician on staff and I grew up poor, so lots of low income and minority patients are more comfortable with me. Those folks rely on the bus system and I'm never going to punish a kid for a bus being late or a parent being irresponsible. That's just how it is." Well, swoon. Needless to say, we decided to keep him.
This is a chart in the waiting room showing whether the doctors are running behind.
It's difficult to read but every doctor is on time but Dr. Maxwell, who is running 45 minutes late.
We were running late also, so we really only waited about 10 minutes. I didn't mind. Sean, however, signed us up for the first appointment of the day for her next check up. Seven in the morning. Yuck.
